Depth // Self Like Ocean

Maya Jane Coles // DJ Kicks Mix

For anyone who actually pays attention to this blog, or knows me personally, you are well aware that house music is not my strong suit or something I really listen to that often. The majority of the things I post are heady, bass driven, glitched out beats that (for the most part) is really not for the casual listener of "electronic" music and often times rarely is something you would hear on the dance floor.

Over the past few months I've been expanding these horizons, hitting the dance (four on the) floor, and checking out new and different blogs. I can't proclaim (publicly) just yet that I'm in love with house music, but if anyone is going to get me there it's Maya Jane Coles. Much in the way that bass music has become a mass of genre defying sounds blending everything from reggae, dubstep, soul, and ambient, she's taking "house" music to places I've not been aware that it was capable of.

Can't You Just // Bwana

Free download from 21 year old Canadian, Bwana, today on Diplo's Mad Decent label. Definitely loving seeing the future bass "genre" just going in all sorts of directions.

Dutty Artz NEW YORK TROPICAL Compilation

The club night 'Dutty Artz NEW YORK TROPICAL' was formulated in NYC in 2008 by DJ Rupture, Matt Shadetek, & Geko Jones to fight the cold and with their Hispanic and Caribbean inspired electronic party jams. The Brooklyn party series lasted through the summer of 2009 and in 2010 this compilation was put out to share the vibe of those parties. It's still very cold in Seattle and it's almost April, so this is hitting the spot right about now.

Other random track I found from the same label.

Rainbow Skies // Crossbeat

Check out the free download below from Belgium IDM producer, CrossbeatRainbow Skies is a bit more of a pop tune with vocals tending to remind me of a Gorillaz vibe, while other tracks/mixes on his Soundcloud lean more in the 2-step, DnB realm.

Airic // membrain

In case you missed the flurry of tweets this am from indie electronic Canadian darling, Grimes. And if you haven't dug in the depths of Pitchfork's new tracks today (because it's apparently not front page news??) check out the new side project from Claire Boucher and Tim Lafontaine aka Cop Car Bonafide . A lot more on the experimental side, but still featuring her trademark vocals which, for me, is an excellent combination. The EP, Rewind, is due to drop later this year.

Loner (Leaks Music Remix) - Burial

18 year old producer from down under takes a Burial track and makes it even prettier? Yeah, I didn't think it was possible either. Check out his bandcamp for more.

"Cocoon" (Nocturnal Sunshine Remix) - Alpines

With only a handful of singles out Alpines has grabbed the attention of bloggers everywhere with their excellent taste in artists to collaborate with on remixes. Nocturnal Sunshine, also know as Maya Jay Coles got her hands on "Cocoon" last summer and transformed this epic pop tune into something a little deeper.

Throwing Snow// IA // MIX 55

Inverted Audio is a London based online magazine focused on electronic music and visual art. Check out today's newest mix from UK downtempo bass producer, Throwing Snow. With other mixes posted from the likes of Raffertie, Solar Bears, & Seekae you can assume that I'll be holled up in my apartment for the next week geeking out on this blog.

"Emitting" - IG88

Check a new track from local, Branden Clark, more widely known as IG88. In true form to his style, it's as sleepy and dreamworthy in it's ambiance, as it is complex and thought provoking in the glitch laden bass lines. Definitively also check out his most recent album drop, A Loom & Not Me, on Portland's label Nueva Forma below streaming in its entirety, as well as several "name your own price" digital albums previously self released on his bandcamp.

"The Space Between Us" Mix - Madeaux

I can't quite recall how I came across Madeaux now, as I've been listening to this mix on repeat for the last 3 days and am in a bit of a daze from it. According to his (her?) tumblr this is the first mix ever put out (slow clap). Chalk full of chopped and screwed remixes of some of my most favorite tracks of the last year, I downloaded every single thing off this soundcloud page. I suggest you do the same.

West in Dust 2012 Compilation

News of newly formed electronic label out of Oakland, West in Dust, was all a buzz on twitter yesterday.

As reported this morning on alt sounds " The West in Dust label is a collaborative endeavor between two genuine electronic music devotees—Dave Reep (a man responsible for multiple production outfits including Elephant & Castle) and music writer/producer Glenn Jackson (James & Evander). Deeply rooted in Oakland, California’s burgeoning beatmaker scene, West In Dust is the pair’s humble attempt to further champion quality electronic sounds, focused on artists that are inventive and forward-thinking while not losing touch with what makes music enjoyable."

Stream the forthcoming compilation below and stop back by their soundcloud for the download link on March 27th.

"No One" - Bassmynt

Another free jam to download from Bassmynt.

Outside (Cralias Remix) - The Weeknd

Cralias released a sprinkling of remixes on his soundcloud and YouTube pages back in December. Download the 9 track EP here . FYI - that Joy Orbison track is everything you wanted and more.

"Slow Stars" - Jacob Rohde

21 year old Aussie producer, Jacob Rohde, released a free EP along with many other previously recorded tracks via his soundcloud yesterday. Leaning toward an ambient/trip hop feel at times, the vocals on "Be Patient" were a pleasant surprise. Much like most electronic music produced these days it's tough to put a label on his sound especially after finding the below track on YouTube.

Dr. Dre - Still D.R.E (Shatterhors Sitdown Refix)

With the number of refixes, remixes, and covers coming out using 90's samples you'd think this would start to get old. Well, maybe if you weren't a teenager in the 90's because I for one, can't wait for more of these to keep coming out. Download this track for free from Danish producer, Shatter Hands soundcloud page and thank me later.

If you're into electronic based hip hop beats be sure to head over to his Bandcamp for many more free tracks.

"Think/Feel" (feat Chelsey Sceffe) - Beat Connection

Hometown heros, Beat Connection, dropped a much anticipated new single as a Fader exclusive this am. After their 2010 EP "Surf Noir" the news today of plans to release a new album this summer is something I personally can't wait for.

"Silver" - RxGibbs

RxGibbs ambient, experimental dream pop EP, Futures was recently released on Cali's own Cascine label. Home to the likes of Chad Valley, Selebrities, Southern Shores, & WinterCoats, Ron Gibbs is a welcome addition to the crew. Check out the video for Silver, directed by Andrew de Freitas, who was recently featured in Juxtapose Magazine as an artist who "aims to expose the strangeness of the everyday"

The Yearn - Pále

18 year old Manchester UK bass producer Pále, released The Yearn EP on January 30th with a lot less fanfare than I would expect given how current and beautifully bass heavy. A musician since grade school, Leo Marcus, states in an interview with Transparent Cities that "composition is important to me" and cites his biggest influences at the moment as being: M83 James Blake, Mount Kimbie, Burial and Ghostpoet.

Download this 4 track EP on Juno.

Tremors - Alpines + Dark Sky

Tremors, the second collaboration that Alpines has done with Dark Sky was released via their blog this a.m. Though the original was recorded over a year ago the rework and accompanying video is new today. The video was filmed on a drive back from the mountains and was thought that the landscape and colouring was perfectly fitted to the minimal yet epic soundscape in the track. Agreed.

10th Anniversary Laptop Battle - Seattle, WA @Lofi

On Saturday January 28th at LoFi Performance Gallery I attended the 10th Anniversary Laptop Battle and took a shit load of recordings and video to document the experience. There was a lot of talent in that room and I was just glad to be witness to all the exceptional beat making up close and personal. Nice work boys!

For a detailed list of the event and participants, go here. I've also posted the same details in the description of the Soundcloud set below.

Please contact me via Facebook, Twitter, or Soundcloud if for some reason I've mislabeled you or you would like the video or recording taken down. Or better yet, follow me if you dig what I'm posting.

Destiny feat. Pional - John Talabot

Much ado over Spanish producer John Talabot's upcoming debut full length release "ƒIN" today after Pitchfork's vote for Best New Track. "Destiny" is the second single to be released in anticipation of the Feb 6th album drop after last months "So Will be Now" also featuring the vocals of Pional. Both tracks have the dark slow build that will surely have fans of Nicolas Jaar and Zomby satisfied.

Video Games (JLYMN RMX) - Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey is not a name that I allow to enter into my vocabulary, let alone is she a subject matter I would've ever considered typing into the blogosphere......until yesterday. Remix after remix after godforsaken remix, of  barely a handful of songs the girl has released (only officially as of today?) could easily have been considered the bain of my existence over the past few months. No amount of Damon Albarn, Jamie Woon, Balam Acab, or Clams Casino could convince me to understand why she deserves my attention.

While, yes I do have to admit to paying attention to her now (sort of), it's actually London based sound design student JLYMN (pronounced Jellyman) who's caught my eardrums. The glitched out, dubstep bass line maintains the downtempo sadness that I can only imagine was the true intention of the song in the first place.

Rhiannon - Essáy & Stumbleine

This collaboration between Simon Schilling aka Essáy and Bristol producer Stumbleine is a sunshiney 'not quite remix' of Fleetwood Mac's Rhiannon. Download this and slew of other eps, remixes, and tracks over at Stumbleine's bandcamp.

The Look - Metronomy (Two Inch Punch 'Shook Shook' Re-Work)

Admittedly, I have spent next to no time at all paying attention to Metronomy for no other reason than pure laziness. This Two Inc Punch re-work might be the inspiration I need to visit to original version of this song. Thanks to Annie Mac for posting this download for free!

"Crazy in Love" refix - Myown

Without so much as a facebook page it's a wonder 1400 people are following Myown on soundcloud. I stumbled across this classy, cosmic bass version of Beyonce's "Crazy in Love" via my new fav producer of the moment Throwing Snow. Almost no information to be found on these guy(/s/gal/s) except a few random links to vimeo pages and a plea for donations so they can buy pot.

"One Grain of Sand" - Josh Jukes

Josh Jukes, the man behind the synths in an instrumental outfit hailing from the UK called Achilles, has been posting some solo releases as of late on Soundcloud. Lots of spacey atmosphere from both the band and the solo effort, but a more vibey hip hop instrumentation on his own is what I'm diggin'.

Crossbeat - Live @ Liquid Flavaz for Urgent.fm

Crossbeat is an appropriately named producer who is blending IDM/Downtempo & Drum & Bass. Check out this live set he did for Urgent.fm back in December. The vocals on the last track are especially beautiful.

"Warp" - Kantyze

The first track off Hospital Records Democast, a podcast dedicated to demos received by unsigned producers throughout the year, features French duo, Kantyze. This is a classy joint that reminds me of the liquid LTJ Bukem days of DnB.
